Proper Classification & Storage
After drilling operations are complete, all drill pipes should be:
- Sorted and stored on pipe racks according to:
- Size
- Wall thickness
- ID (bore size)
- Steel grade
- Classification level
- Positioned neatly to prevent deformation or accidental damage
Thorough Cleaning & Inspection
Before storage, each drill pipe must undergo the following:
- Clean thoroughly using fresh water:
- Pipe interior and exterior
- Threaded connections
- Shoulder sealing surfaces
- Dry immediately after rinsing to prevent corrosion
- Perform a full inspection, checking for:
- Surface cracks or gouges
- Thread integrity
- Uneven wear on joints
- Damaged or dented shoulders
- Bending or bite marks on pipe body
- Corrosion or pitting on inner/outer surfaces
Advanced NDT recommended:
Where conditions permit, apply:
- Ultrasonic testing (UT) on the pipe body
- Magnetic particle inspection (MPI) on threads
This significantly lowers the risk of: - Joint thread fractures
- Leakage due to pipe body failure
Anti-Corrosion Protection
For undamaged drill pipes:
- Apply rust preventive compound to the threads and shoulder faces
- Install thread protectors (thread protectors recommended)
- Ensure all protection measures are in place before storage
Handling Defective Drill Pipe
- Clearly mark problematic drill pipes using paint or other visual indicators
- Store separately to avoid accidental reuse
- Schedule repair or replacement promptly to avoid disruption in future operations
Long-Term Storage Guidelines
For drill pipe stored outdoors for extended periods:
- Cover with waterproof tarpaulins
- Conduct routine inspections to check for:
- Internal and external corrosion
- Moisture-related damage
- Take necessary steps for moisture and corrosion protection
Conclusion:
Effective post-operation drill pipe management not only reduces the likelihood of future failures but also helps control operational costs and ensures reliable performance in the field.
