News about China’s Forging Capability

Many important components of some heavy equipment are forged in Chinese hydraulic press forging plants. A steel ingot with a weight of approx. 500 tons was taken out from the heating furnace and transported to a 15,000-ton hydraulic press for forging. This 15,000-ton heavy-duty free forging hydraulic press is currently very advanced in China. It is a key step in forging core components of some heavy equipment, as only through sufficient forging these equipment can achieve higher performance and meet higher requirements. China’s high-end processing of large forgings is required in fields such as nuclear power, hydropower, metallurgy and petrochemicals equipment.

Previously, for example, super-large forgings like heavy-duty petrochemical vessels used welded structures. However, welding has a problem: it has a long manufacturing cycle and high cost, and the presence of weld seams reduces its service life. Now, with the assistance of this 15,000-ton hydraulic press, China has achieved a series of significant achievements in key core components for nuclear power, hydropower, and heavy-duty petrochemical vessels.

Currently, China has developed integral tube plate forgings with a diameter of 9 meters, along with super-large conical cylinder forgings with a diameter of 6.7 meters, and has mastered the core manufacturing technology for these types of forgings. This technology has also been successfully applied to critical parts of related heavy-duty petrochemical vessels, resulting in good economic benefits and achieving domestic production independence for such forgings. By promoting key technological breakthroughs and organizing enterprises to develop the first set of products (487 items) with independent intellectual property rights, a number of created products in fields such as aerospace, power equipment, nuclear power equipment, special robots, and high-speed heavy-duty railway freight cars have reached world-leading levels.

Currently, China is conducting research and development on core components of 500 MW impact-type turbine-generator units. This development will enable China to possess the production capability for the “heart” forging of the world’s largest-sized and heaviest hydroelectric units.
